In Nevada’s Valley of Fire State Park

A hiker crests a hill on the way to the Fire Maze. His only companion, a trail marker at the top. Black and white and white leaves the lines of the earth bare. I think of Kate Bush:

And if I only could,
I’d make a deal with God,
And I’d get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
With no problems.
